Canadian Election Study

CES 1997 Consultation

The team is inviting scholars in the broader social science community across the country to make proposals for question items that should be added, deleted or formulated differently in the survey instruments. Draft versions of the proposed CES 1997 survey instruments will be available in mid-March. The CES 1993 Pre-Election Rolling Cross-Section Survey, the CES 1993 Post- Election Survey, and the CES 1993 Mailback Survey are available for consultation.

Proposals should be submitted as soon as possible to Elisabeth Gidengil. Please note that our ability to accommodate new items is constrained by the limited space available in the survey instruments. Priority will be given to items proposed for the pre-election rolling cross-section which can be expected to have a dynamic impact on vote intentions. New items proposed for the mailback survey should relate to fundamental values, orientations towards society and politics, and core identities.

Proposals will be reviewed by both the team members and the interdisciplinary advisory committee that has been established to review and comment upon the survey instruments. The committee consists of: Herman Bakvis (Dalhousie, Political Science), Keith Banting (Queen's, School of Policy Studies), Raymond Breton (Toronto, Sociology), Lynda Erickson (Simon Fraser, Political Science), John Fox (McMaster, Sociology), Jonathan Freedman (Toronto, Psychology), Richard Johnston (UBC, Political Science), Larry LeDuc (Toronto, Political Science), Desmond Morton (McGill, History and Institute for the Study of Canada), Ken Norrie (Alberta, Economics), Pippa Norris (Harvard, Joan Shorenstein Barone Center on Press, Politics, and Public Policy), Vincent Price (Michigan, Communications), Philip Tetlock (Ohio State, Psychology), and John Zaller (UCLA, Political Science).
